Please, show me your poker face! Puppppuppppupoker face.
Mine needs some work…
The lovely mother of one of my students ( the one that has taken me and Dan under her Japanese culture wing), recently invited us to a poker night. She had been gifted a poker set from a British friend and was keen to use it! Her English is fabulous and she has travelled the world, so is keen to share stories of her experiences.
We were greeted with a banquet fit for royalty. She had prepared various food from different cultures to cater for our range of tastes. And then we got down to the poker.
To be honest, none of us were particularly good, but we all gave it a jolly good shot! It was a lot of fun and we also learnt how to play ‘sort of’ poker. After winning one round each, our host brings out the big shots…something she had been keeping under wraps until the last moment, but something she knew we would love…
A BIG bucket of fireworks! We were with two Australian friends, who let us know that fireworks are illegal there. So, this was a particularly special treat for them! We took a walk to the local beach and let them rip! It was amazing fun, if borderline dangerous.
It was an evening where we felt like we were part of a community and making more friends. It was a chance for me to get to know my student more, and see her funny, witty personality. It was an experience I will not forget and I really hope we are able to repeat in the future! Good friends and good games.
